Abstract
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence into scientific research has been accompanied by the raising concern for research integrity, accountability and transparency. This study examines the characteristics of retracted journal publications in the field of artificial intelligence. Data were extracted from the Scopus database, with a focus on journal articles. PRISMA protocols were followed for the systematic review. Data analysis was performed using Ms Excel and SPSS. The retraction watch database was referred to note the cause for retraction, and Scopus was referred to obtain the CiteScores. The study finding indicates a surge in AI research publications, with the retraction rate being highest in 2023. The Journal of Healthcare Engineering, published by Hindawi Limited, has the largest number of retractions. Ninety-three percent of journals had a CiteScore, while single-authored articles had the highest retraction. The correlation analysis indicates a significant relationship between CiteScore and the number of authors of retracted publications. Data, results, and computer-aided content or computer-generated content concerns are key drivers of retraction in AI research. This study offers important insights into the significance of artificial intelligence research and its impact on research integrity. It precisely examines the challenges faced by the field of artificial intelligence in upholding academic integrity, offering a unique analysis. The study’s outcome calls for stricter ethical regulations prior to manuscript submission.
