Abstract

We present 3DSlicer computer software possibly could be helpful for visualising formation of the fetal brain, and that gives us anatomical information of the choroid plexus cyst, and cerebral hypoplasia in the second trimester. The 3DSlicer (slicer.org) is an open-source medical visualisation and analysis software package for medical image computing. Grow cut segmentation method is a competitive region growing algorithm using cellular automata, to obtain a clearer image of fetal anatomy in 3DSlicer. We used a Voluson E6 (GE Healthcare) ultrasound machine. We obtained 3D ultrasound images of the choroid plexus and cerebrum at 12, 14 and 19 weeks of gestation in DICOM format. The data was imported in to 3DSlicer, label statistics were computed after grow cut segmentation was done and the 3D surface models were created using the Marching Cube algorithm. 3DSlicer could retract grow cut segmentation from the original 3D ultrasound image. Label statistics analysis at 12, 14 and 19 weeks measured the volume of the choroid plexus; 381.76, 480.83 and 1203.27 mm3, the volume of the cerebrum; 21.67, 173.68 and 469.83 mm3 respectively.
