Abstract
Vascular calcification is a pathological process during which deposits of calcium mineral in vessel walls are progressively formed, leading to tissue stiffening, plaque rupture, and heart failure The mortality rate is 3% among non-calcification individuals, while it reaches 28% in patients with high levels of vascular calcification Despite rapid advances in the understanding of this health problem, medical treatments targeting vascular calcification are still lacking. There are no approved therapeutic drugs available except the costly invasive transcatheter procedures and surgeries that do not fully address the wide spectrum of these conditions Unfortunately, current studies of vascular calcification are far behind the actual needs, probably because vascular calcification, especially microcalcification, is difficult to diagnose and treat.
