Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a computer science branch that mimics aspects of human intelligence such as learning or pattern recognition through computational techniques. Applications of AI in Dentistry are growing as AI can help clinicians by providing them with a quantitative understanding of structures and functions of biological systems, predictable outcomes of a treatment plan, diagnosis, and prognosis of oral diseases that could improve treatment outcomes. There are ongoing efforts for secure cloud-based electronic dental records that will allow better data management of clinical, imaging, biological or genetic information when indicated. In this chapter, we review state-of-the-art AI techniques developed for data management, integration, and in-depth analysis in the field of Dentistry, and the parameters that affect the generalizability of such techniques. We categorize these AI techniques, based on their type of input data, into AI for Imaging or Integrative data. Additionally, we highlight the evaluation metrics to rigorously test the robustness of the AI approaches.
