Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a general-purpose technology with major impact on all aspects of society and our everyday life. AI research and development is about understanding intelligence sufficiently well to be able to recreate it in machines. Most AI systems work by taking input, analysing this data, making decisions, and then acting based on these decisions. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce artificial intelligence from a non-technical perspective. It will provide an overview of what AI is and the two main approaches to AI, reasoning and learning, and importantly the integration of these. To make sure that AI provides value to society, it should be trustworthy, meaning that it should be legal, ethical, and robust. Another very important aspect is effective human-AI interaction and collaboration, to realise the powerful combination of humans and AI. Today it is clear that AI has become a truly interdisciplinary field, connecting computer science to, for example, cognitive and social sciences. Even though much has been accomplished in AI, the most important and fascinating breakthroughs lie ahead of us.
