Abstract
In recent years the dental community has shown a growing interest in AI. When used during a patient visit, AI can help engage patients in decision-making by visualizing the findings, increasing face time by automating routine procedures such as filling dental charts, and decreasing the chance of missed pathology by pointing attention to suspicious regions. In computer-aided design and manufacturing, AI can help reach more predictable treatment results while reducing chair time. AI-based teledentistry can shift care to a more proactive approach by allowing continuous monitoring. Although there are numerous opportunities for AI in dentistry, AI is not widely used by the specialty. This chapter discusses what makes AI in dentistry special in both its opportunities and its challenges.
