Abstract

To the editor, We appreciate that Kleebayoon et al had an interest in our recent article and gave us a great opportunity to address significant concerns about the use of ChatGPT in academic environments. In their letter to the editor, Kleebayoon et al highlighted several important issues surrounding the adoption of ChatGPT in academic contexts. We would like to clarify a few foundational assumptions that guided our perspectives on the utility of ChatGPT. First of all, in our study, we perceive generative artificial intelligence as a tool for hypothesis generation. It is our belief that the role of humans remains crucial in acting as hypothesis evaluators. Through the synergetic relationship between humans and machines, we believe that we can derive enhanced and innovative research concepts. Large Language Models craft sentences by connecting statistically probable words in a sequence that is aligned with human preferences, much like a sophisticated word processor. Therefore, it is essential that humans critically assess the content produced by Large Language Models, utilizing their expertise and judgment to discern which ideas are beneficial to the field of medicine. Secondly, we would like to stress that our proposal is designed to aid in the conceptualization of innovative research ideas and does not extend to the direct application in clinical practices involving patients. Just as we are cautious with powerful medications that have potential side effects, the use of generative artificial intelligence should be approached with a discerning mindset, fully acknowledging its inherent limitations. The challenge is to minimize potential pitfalls while maximizing its capacity to contribute positively. In conclusion, our stance remains that, when used carefully, artificial intelligence can play a beneficial role in academic research, helping to generate new ideas and potentially leading to significant discoveries and deeper understanding.
