Artificial intelligence as a tool in the visual effects and film industry

Abstract

With the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, it has become an important factor in visual effects (VFX) production and the film industry. AI when combined with machine learning has the potential to transform VFX production to the next level. In this study, we aim to analyze and summarize the current use of artificial intelligence in the Film Industry and VFX. Artificial intelligence has helped film directors and producers in areas running from script writing, motion picture, and character animation to final film composition and tracking. This research summarizes the different areas, be it pre-production, production, or post-production, where AI has been extensively applied in the filmmaking process. In addition, we have also done a survey which consists of a questionnaire indicating how AI is useful for VFX and the film industry in present and future. The results show that AI in filmmaking can help in improving the quality of film production and can ensure better box-office returns.
