Abstract
This chapter critically analyzes the ongoing transformation of traditional health care by digitalization and incorporation of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Digitalized solutions for collection and analysis of copious amounts of medical data and for direct interactions with patients already exist in clinical practice. Increased use of AI in medicine could lead to higher efficiency, cost-savings, and increased accessibility and equity. However, practical, and ethical, challenges including risk OF errors and bias, loss of transparency and control, and issues regarding privacy, patient autonomy, and physicians’ responsibilities must be addressed. The role of physicians will undoubtedly transform profoundly in this new ecosystem. We argue that health care professionals should honor their fiduciary duty toward patients and society by critically evaluating developing AI applications and promoting the creation of a moral framework for AI in healthcare that can form the basis for global regulation.
