Revising Australian Academic Integrity Policy for the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

Academic integrity is considered under threat in the age of artificial intelligence owing to new technologies. The sector has questioned exemplary responses in institutional academic integrity policy and proposed changes to what is exemplary. This chapter examines three issues seen in proposed academic integrity policy changes. The first issue is whether to ban or accept the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools. The second issue is whether the proposed changes are sufficient to cover what is needed in academic integrity policy. The third issue is what other changes are needed to support academic integrity throughout a student's interactions with an institution. The chapter concludes with a proposal of how the work of the exemplary academic integrity project should not be added to but modernized to address questions raised in the age of artificial intelligence.
