The Impact of AI Tools in Education Environment

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly gaining popularity and influence in our society. New emerging artificial intelligence tools (AIT) are released to the public and are gaining momentum with a growing debate about the possible negative and positive effects of these new tools on students' skills, specifically their emotional intelligence (EI). This article addresses the scarcity of research related to Artificial Intelligence Tools AIT specifically ChatGPT, its possible negative effect on the EI of engineering and non-engineering students, and their level of EI. We built an online questionnaire that we shared electronically with students worldwide on the Facebook platform and in classrooms by uni-versity professors. We used Wong and Law's WLEIS self-report emotional intelligence scale and adapted it for our research. Most answers received are from Tunisia and Hungary. The findings demonstrate that students who study engineering tend to have lower emotional intelligence (EI) than non-engineering students. Additionally, the use of ChatGPT appears to have a somewhat detrimental impact on students' EI abilities, regardless of whether or not they have any concerns regarding artificial intelligence technology (AIT). However, it should be noted that students are still utilizing ChatGPT for both personal and academic purposes
