AI in Foreign Language Learning in Engineering Education: the Benefits and Challenges of Using ChatGPT

Abstract
This study examines the use of artificial intelligence in foreign language learning in engineering education. Some issues concerning learning a foreign language at a non-linguistic department are underlined. The benefits and possible challenges of using ChatGPT and ways to deal with the challenges are examined. Practical ways of ChatGPT use in Foreign language class are suggested (preliminary stage, training stage of working with ChatGPT, Practicing ChatGPT based bots (vocabulary replenishment, studying and practicing the rules of English grammar, written practice, learning writing styles, conducting a dialogue) and the set of 12 requests on the topic “Thermodynamics” as an illustration of the practical use of ChatGPT by first-year students of the faculties “Thermal Energy and Thermal Engineering” and “Nuclear Energy and Thermal Physics” are presented. Besides, the tips for ChatGPT use stated by students during ChatGPT practice are given. Students’ attitude study of ChatGPT use based on an after-practice questionary is exposed.
