Abstract
Abstract Understanding plagiarism, duplicate submission, and their related issues is paramount for everyone in an academic field. This chapter discusses plagiarism, which may be the most common form of research misconduct and occurs throughout all aspects of the written word, including essays, grant applications, published articles, and other reports. The ramifications of plagiarism can be severe and may adversely affect an academic career but, as this chapter explains, understanding the types of plagiarism and the principles of good scholarship can help authors avoid this type of misconduct. In addition to defining plagiarism and its scope in academic publications, this chapter addresses different types of plagiarism, methods to detect plagiarism, consequences of plagiarism, best practices to avoid plagiarism, and use of plagiarism detection software.
