Abstract
This chapter critically analyzes the complex interplay between artificial intelligence (AI) and societal tensions, examining how AI-induced shifts in power dynamics contribute to various forms of conflict. Specifically, this chapter aims to advance knowledge by creating a productive interdisciplinary dialog between the normative field of AI ethics and the descriptive field of conflict studies. We contend that focusing on power is the most effective way to create synergy between them. To this end, our analysis revolves around three types of power: dispositional, relational, and systemic. Our discussion begins with a foundational definition of AI that highlights machine learning systems and emphasizes their role in shaping social conflicts. We argue AI influences power dynamics by actively triggering, mitigating, or shaping conflicts across different levels: from global geopolitics—where AI impacts digital sovereignty and international relations—to workplace environments—where it alters employer-employee dynamics. The chapter concludes by clarifying how socially disruptive AI conflicts can be detrimental and constructive forces for positive change. Our comprehensive findings, thus, offer valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders because they justify prioritizing proactive engagement with AI's transformative potential, and offer theoretical tools for meeting key challenges.
