Abstract

Compound proximal tibia fractures pose significant challenges due to their complexity and high complication rates. Various surgical techniques, including plating, external fixation, and intramedullary nailing, have been employed to address these fractures. Suprapatellar nailing has emerged as a viable treatment option especially in compound fractures where the usage of plate osteosynthesis has shown high complications rates like infection. This study aims to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of suprapatellar nailing in patients with compound proximal tibia fractures. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 30 patients with compound proximal tibia fractures treated with suprapatellar nailing. Outcome measures included union rate, healing time, complication rate, range of motion, and functional scores. The union rate was 93.3% at 12-24 weeks postoperatively. The mean healing time was 16 weeks from stabilization. The complication rates were very less which included minimal wound infection and 2 cases of delayed union. Range of motion improved significantly from 3-6 weeks postoperatively. Functional scores, measured using the Karlstrom-Olerud Score, averaged 84.2, indicating satisfactory outcomes. Suprapatellar nailing is an effective treatment option for compound proximal tibia fractures, offering high union rates, acceptable complication rates, and satisfactory functional outcomes.
