Abstract
Emerging artificial intelligence tools transform traditional teaching and learning paradigms, prompting educators to reassess their approaches to course design and structure. This paper presents an innovative teaching mode aimed at cultivating students’ high-order thinking and AI application skills in university-level L2 writing. By incorporating ChatGPT into the course College English (III), an integrated “teacher-AI-student” educational environment is created. This approach fosters an interactive learning environment that shifts focus from traditional writing exercises to cultivating high-order thinking and essential technical skills in the digital age. An AI-aided six-step writing instruction method has been developed, emphasizing thematic recognition, intention understanding, structural migration, skill analysis, comprehensive argumentation, and expressive writing, alongside progressive AI training. The teaching practice has led to significant pedagogical improvements in student outcomes, including enhanced high-order thinking skills in L2 writing and increased proficiency in AI application.
