Abstract

This chapter focuses on the impact artificial intelligence is having on higher education, specifically in academic research and writing, and explores an array of AI tools tailored to enhance academic endeavors, providing insights into their significance, purpose, and impact within higher education settings. AI tools can greatly speed up the process for academic researchers in gathering, analyzing and presenting research data. In addition, the chapter reviews the use of AI tools for writing, editing, paraphrasing, and summarizing literature and recommends numerous tools for use. The potential organizational challenges are also addressed such as faculty resistance, the impact to technology support, and the ethics related to academic integrity associated with the use of artificial intelligence for both students and faculty. Recommendations for future research and a call to educators for next steps are included.
