Abstract
• The increase in scientific publication volume has not been matched by a proportional increase in available and willing reviewers. • Generative AI has the potential to expedite the first and second level review process. • Currently, generative AI has several unique challenges that limit its use in manuscript review. • Further research and governance are needed before generative AI can be authorized for manuscript review by publishers.
