Abstract

Abstract Chronic illnesses not caused by an infectious agent are generally classified as non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and together are the major cause of illness, disability, and death worldwide. This chapter describes the global burden of disease due to NCDs, the leading risk factors of tobacco, alcohol, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, and air pollution, and the leading disease groups of cardiovascular disease, cancers, diabetes, respiratory diseases, and mental illness. It describes the actions that can be taken in the primary health care setting to prevent, control, and manage NCDs, through engagement of people, communities, health care professionals, schools and workplaces, industry, and policy makers
