Abstract
This paper explores the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its role in the educational sector. It specifically investigates how generative AI tools – most notably ChatGPT – affect students' learning experiences and shape their perceptions of AI technology in educational setting. The theoretical framework of the paper is based on an analysis of relevant literature, while the empirical part of the research relies on a survey conducted among students at the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek. A questionnaire was used, covering demographic data, students' familiarity with ChatGPT, its frequency of use for academic purposes, and opinions on its impact on the educational process and the need for regulation of these tools. The results show that ChatGPT has become a significant tool in students' academic lives but also evokes mixed views on its influence on education. Most students recognize its advantages, such as time savings and easier learning, but are also aware of challenges like reduced critical thinking and dependency on technology. The paper highlights the need to introduce ethical guidelines for the use of generative AI in educational settings and calls for further research to include professors' perceptions on this topic.
