Abstract
Abstract This chapter outlines the contemporary debate around the ethics of artificial intelligence, considering how far ethical values might be expected to be embedded into the technologies themselves and exploring where this perspective on ethics of artificial intelligence is complementary to and overlapping with existing understandings of ethics in healthcare. The chapter makes an argument for taking into account the infrastructures into which artificial intelligence is embedded and the processes of building and sustaining those infrastructures as sites with ethical consequence. Although dominant debates around the principles of ethical artificial intelligence suggest that algorithmic audit and governance oversight are needed, this chapter argues for a broadened understanding that focuses on diverse forms of everyday ethical language and practice across the infrastructures that develop and deploy smart care.
