Abstract
Smart health tracking systems have been implemented in sports with the aim to leverage athletes’ metrics to optimize coaching strategies, however, fully automated and generic interventions have led to demotivating athletes and disengagement. To fill in the gaps, we explore current health coaching strategies obtaining perceived benefits, risks, and challenges from off-the-shelf wearables that are relevant to performance and propose a person-centric health coaching dashboard design coupled with explainable AI (PXAI-Coach) to enable athletes to engage in health monitoring and coaching strategies. We interviewed 27 college student athletes and their 6 coaches to gain insight on their experiences using wearable technologies to monitor health and performance, and evaluated the proposed prototype design. We highlight design guidelines to personalize user goals, adapt preference needs, explore explainable algorithms, and support data-driven insights for informed decision-making.
