Abstract
Large programming courses face critical challenges in providing personalized support at scale. Educators have responded by developing specialized AI tutors, yet empirical research comparing their effectiveness to general-purpose tools and traditional support remains scarce. We conducted an exploratory randomized, between-subjects mixed-methods study (N=33) in which students implemented the Burrows–Wheeler Transform under one of three conditions: a context-aware AI tutor (Iris), a general-purpose chatbot (ChatGPT), or no AI support.
