Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly emerged as a transformative force in the way organizations design, deliver, and evaluate employee training and development. AI has the ability to greatly enhance workforce skill acquisition and organisational performance by facilitating data-driven insights, adaptable learning environments, and improved accessibility. At the same time, its integration into training systems presents notable challenges, including concerns about ethical use, data governance, technological dependence, and the readiness of both trainers and learners to adapt to AI-mediated methods. This paper reviews the existing body of literature to examine the evolving role of AI in employee training and development, highlighting its importance in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing work environment, the strategic opportunities it creates, and the barriers that must be addressed. The discussion integrates theoretical perspectives and examples from diverse sectors, offering a balanced understanding of AI’s potential and its limitations. The study concludes with reflections on future directions for leveraging AI to foster a more agile, skilled, and innovative and market-ready workforce.
