Abstract
This chapter explores two distinct yet complementary approaches to the ethics of artificial intelligence (AI): AI as an instrument and AI as a transformative global force. The first perspective focuses on the ethical regulation of AI within existing social, economic, and political structures, addressing issues such as transparency, fairness, accountability, and bias mitigation. It examines how AI systems can be aligned with ethical principles to ensure responsible deployment in domains such as hiring, law enforcement, and healthcare. The second perspective, often overlooked, considers the broader existential and societal implications of AI, particularly in the long-term transformation of human agency, employment, and meaning-making. The chapter argues that AI’s increasing integration into decision-making and automation may lead to a profound shift in how humans interact with their environment, which is increasingly populated with artificial and autonomous agents, potentially diminishing their sense of purpose and agency. Through an analysis of both perspectives, the chapter highlights the need for AI ethics to extend beyond instrumental concerns to address the structural and philosophical transformations AI may induce. Drawing from contemporary debates and recent research, it proposes a dual ethical framework that balances immediate regulatory challenges with the foresight needed to anticipate and shape AI’s long-term impact on human society.
