Abstract

Background Periodontal diseases affect 50% of adults globally, creating significant health challenges. Patient education is vital for periodontal treatment, but traditional methods have limitations like uniform content and time constraints. Artificial intelligence (AI) solutions can enhance education through personalized, interactive approaches. Objective The goal of this narrative review is to assess current AI applications for their effectiveness in periodontal patient education and to propose future research questions and ways to incorporate these technologies in daily practice. Methods A narrative approach investigated recent literature on AI applications in periodontal patient education. The search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science between 2018 and 2025. Due to limited papers on AI in periodontal patient education, this narrative review includes RCTs, retrospective studies, systematic reviews, and expert opinions. After screening for AI in dental and periodontal patient education, 55 references were included based on AI technologies in patient education. Chatbots, mobile apps, and personalized learning systems were relevant to the matching studies. Results AI in periodontal patient education is currently employed in the form of chatbots using natural language processing, mobile applications with personalized learning algorithms, and AI-assisted visual educational tools. Research shows that AI-enabled educational interventions can enhance patient knowledge retention, treatment adherence, and oral-hygiene-related behaviors. Conclusions AI technologies have the potential to revolutionize periodontal patient education with a personalized, accessible and evidence-based manner. However, the current evidence base is limited, with minimum studies specifically addressing AI applications in periodontal patient education.
