Abstract

The current study aims to investigate undergraduate students' points of view on using ChatGPT as a learning tool in the faculty of education, Soran University, Erbil, Iraq. It also highlights its benefits, usage patterns, and the differences between humanities and applied science students' perspectives on its use. The study population consisted of 1,659 students from four departments of the Faculty of Education, with a target sample of 371 participants actively using ChatGPT. The pilot study was also conducted to determine the exact sample size of the study. A descriptive survey design was employed, utilizing a 24-item questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale adapted from other reliable studies. Validity was confirmed through Pearson's Correlation, and reliability was established using test-retest. The data were analyzed by using a one-sample t-test and a two-sample t-test. The study's findings revealed overwhelmingly positive perceptions of ChatGPT, with students valuing its ease of use, efficiency in completing assignments, and ability to simplify complex topics. Key benefits included personalized learning support, instant feedback, and assistance in summarization and translation. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in ChatGPT usage between students in the human sciences and those in applied sciences, indicating its universal utility across disciplines. Based on the above-mentioned results, several recommendations and suggestions for further study were provided.
