Legal education in the age of AI: navigating the ChatGPT conundrum at Indian Law University

Learning outcomes After completion of the case study, the students will be able to explore the ethical implications of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) technologies like ChatGPT into legal education; evaluate the impact of AI on traditional legal research skills and the preservation of critical thinking in legal education; analyze the strategic considerations for academic institutions when adopting emerging technologies; discuss the challenges of balancing innovation with ethical standards in a university setting; and foster an understanding of the broader implications of AI in professional education and its potential to reshape the future of legal practice. Case overview/synopsis In March 2023, Indian Law University (ILU), an established name in legal education, faced a serious challenge with the evolution of ChatGPT. The advanced large language model emerged as a powerful tool with the potential to revolutionize legal education by providing students with unparalleled access to vast legal knowledge and enhancing their research capabilities. This advancement brought significant concerns along with its powers. The vice-chancellor and the academic leadership at ILU grappled with the ethical implications of AI, including the risks of over-dependence, erosion of traditional research skills and potential for plagiarism. The ILU leadership contemplated whether to embrace ChatGPT as a supplementary tool in their educational framework or to restrict its use to preserve the integrity of traditional legal education.
