Abstract
With the increasing impact on society of intelligent technology, trust is becoming more and more crucial in public institutions, healthcare, education, and finance as new systems are built to make or support human decisions. People will need to have faith in the assurance that systems will be transparent, accountable, and safe. The next chapter explores how trust might be considered a thread through the entire life of a system, from its early stages of training and design through continuing day-to-day operations. This discussion brings together what might otherwise be considered three distinct goals: ensuring that systems are worthy of trust, treating people equitably, and doing so in a transparent and accountable manner. Using organizational experiences and real-world examples, the chapter examines how large, complex systems are built, tested, and kept up. In this context, trust is more than a set of principles that inform choices, enable transparency, and foster long-term success.
