When Machines Speak Wisdom

Abstract

This study evaluates how three major AI platforms, ChatGPT, Gemini AI, and DeepSeek, interpret Bruneian proverbs (Perambahan Brunei) from the domains of human traits, animals, and nature. It analyses each platform's literal translations, metaphorical interpretations, cultural contextualization, and moral framing based on 30 proverbs. Findings reveal distinct interpretive patterns. ChatGPT offers explanations grounded in Bruneian values but often oversimplifies cultural meanings. Gemini AI showcases the best cultural literacy, preserving Malay nuances and depth, while DeepSeek demonstrates moderate cultural awareness but frequently reframes proverbs with a functional approach. The study emphasises the need for AI design that prioritises cultural specificity and community expertise, highlighting the importance of responsible AI development to ensure local control over the interpretation of heritage.
