Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) in Nigeria has led to a surge in data collection and use. A qualitative approach was employed, involving interviews with policymakers and experts in the field of AI ethics and data governance. Interviews revealed that there is a significant concern about the misuse of personal data by private sector entities, particularly in health care and financial sectors. The findings highlight the need for robust legal frameworks and ethical guidelines to protect citizens' rights while promoting innovation in AI applications. Recommendations include developing comprehensive data protection laws, enhancing public awareness campaigns on privacy issues, and establishing independent oversight bodies.
