Abstract
AbstractThis study explores the adoption and usage of generative AI tools by library professionals in India, specifically ChatGPT and Gemini. It examines librarians’ level of familiarity with AI tools, the frequency of their use, and their effectiveness in enhancing library management and services. The study adopted a survey method, and 808 library professionals participated across various types of libraries. The study revealed that the majority (95.3%) of respondents are familiar with AI tools, of which ChatGPT (free version) is the most widely used tool, while Gemini is less adopted. The research and college library professionals have the highest familiarity with AI tools, followed by the university libraries, and more than 43% use them daily; nearly 91% find these tools effective and valuable, and over 85% of respondents are likely to use them for decision-making in the libraries. The findings highlight that AI tools are mainly used for administrative tasks, resource discovery, document summarization, and data analysis. Further, the paper also highlights the different methods for enhancing AI skills among library professionals and users.
