PERCEPTIONS AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS AI-ASSISTED LITERARY TRANSLATION IN TURKIYE: THE CASE OF DEDALUS KITAP

Abstract

The past decade has witnessed a growing and often controversial debate over the feasibility of artificial intelligence in literary translation, particularly among translation studies scholars and professional literary translators. Within this evolving landscape, this study critically examines how AI-assisted literary translation (AIALT) is perceived and evaluated by literary stakeholders in Turkiye. Focusing on the high-profile case of Dedalus Kitap, the first Turkish publisher to publicly disclose its use of AI in translating literary texts, this study aims to explore how various literary stakeholders in Turkiye, including translators, publishers, critics, and readers, perceive AIALT and what concerns emerge, ranging from doubts about translation quality and ethical transparency to anxieties over professional displacement and the future of human translators. Reflexive thematic analysis was applied to data collected through a structured web search encompassing public online discourse across social media, news articles, blogs, and forums. The findings revealed that although scepticism and resistance were widespread, they were accompanied by a smaller yet significant strand of cautious engagement and forward-looking interest in AI’s potential for literary translation.
