Abstract

Abstract : The rapid integration of generative artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT has significantly transformed modern educational practices. This study examines the impact of generative AI on students’ creativity and critical thinking skills among higher secondary and undergraduate learners in Bhopal. A descriptive research design was employed to analyze both positive and negative cognitive outcomes associated with AI usage. The population of the study consisted of students from selected institutions in Bhopal, including government and private colleges. A sample of 120 students was selected using stratified random sampling, ensuring representation across academic streams (science, commerce, and humanities). Data were collected through structured questionnaires and critical thinking assessment tasks. The findings reveal that generative AI tools enhance academic productivity, idea generation, and access to information, thereby supporting creative thinking. Students reported using AI for brainstorming, drafting assignments, and simplifying complex concepts, aligning with recent studies indicating increased engagement and self-directed learning among AI users. However, excessive reliance on AI was found to reduce independent problem-solving abilities and critical analysis, as students tend to accept AI-generated responses without evaluation. Experts have also cautioned that overuse of AI may weaken originality and cognitive engagement among learners. The study concludes that while generative AI has the potential to foster creativity, its impact on critical thinking is mixed. Therefore, educational institutions must adopt balanced strategies, integrating AI as a supportive tool while promoting analytical skills and ethical usage among students. Keywords : Generative AI tools, critical thinking, Creativity.
